When I was a child, I can remember seeing a tent revival in our city. I was very curious as to went on under these large tents. As we slowly passed by, my dad would slow the car down so we could see inside. I remember large amounts of people, a stage set up at the far end with people playing instruments, such as accordions, trupets, guitars, and drums. The music was loud, and the preacher who spoke had a microphone and a pulpit. There was straw on the dirt floor and folding chairs all lined up.
Later on in my life, I was invited to one of these tent services by a friend, and to grant her request, I submitted to go. The tent was large, and the gospel music was vibrant. People clapped their hands, and the worship was lively. If you were a guest, like I was, you could feel the vibration and energy in the atmosphere. There were people with testimonies that were called to the front to tell the crowd how Jesus saved them from a life of sin. They told of their deliverance from alcohol, drugs, pornography, depression, and a plethora of addictions. The general crowd was moved with tears as they spoke. Many came out of their seats to the front, falling on their knees in repentance. As the preacher and elders prayed with them, many found their salvation that night.
And then the preacher began to read his text from the Bible. He spoke to the entire crowd, and to those who were still doubtful that there could be any change in their lives. He said if they could but believe in a saviour that loved them so much, that he died on the cross so that their sins could be forever removed, they could find peace and be free from their chains of addictions. Many went forward and began to call on the Lord. The preacher assured them that they must be baptized in the saving Name of Jesus, and that they could become a new creature in Christ. Many that evening were baptized, and filled with the gift of the Holy Spirit, speaking with new tongues.
As a young couple, my husband and I were privileged to also partake of the born again experience, exampled in the book of the Acts of the Apostles in the bible. We were both baptized in the Name of the Lord Jesus, and we both received the gift of the Holy Spirit, with evidence of Speaking with Tongues. This was over 62 years ago, and our walk with the Lord is as strong as it was then. We are forever grateful.
