In the middle of August, 2025, the heat wave in Terre Haute, Indiana, where I live, has been unrelentingly hot. Day in and day out, the weather is nothing more than sweltering. Even with frequent watering and occasional rain pours, the rose garden, shade garden, and even the vegetable have definitely suffered. Most everyone ducts in and out of air-conditioned places to get relief. And, like every summer, I wonder the same thing…surely it is just a matter of time until we are all baked to a crisp.
I can still hear the sound of the bell on the ice cream truck as it slowly enters our street. Everyone stops what they are doing; kids are running into the house begging mom for money to get an ice cream cone. The children are searching for coins; under the couch pillows, on dad’s dresser, and all the other places where we might find a quarter or two. Hurry, I say…we must get out there before the ice cream man pulls away!
With the weather as hot as blazes, we have to admit the joy of the ice cream cone is such a welcome reprieve. Even the moms, break down and purchase a treat. While we are still out in the street, clutching our ice cream, with kids riding their bikes in circles, everyone seems happy and, for the moment, we forget about the dog days of summer.
It is a tradition to celebrate my husband’s birthday, September 4th, on the Labor Day weekend. Right along with the BBQ, potato salad, and baked beans, I always make the Rocky Road Ice Cream Cake, mainly for Grant, our grandson, who shares his birthday with his grandpa. You can find the recipe pictured in my Rosalie Serving Best Loved Italain cookbook. I also have it listed on my website, rosalieserving, under the Rosalie Serving Country section. So, either way you can get this marvellous ice cream cake recipe that will bring joy to everyone and even quench the heat. Happy summer days!
