NOTE: There are many recipes for this bread, but this is one of the best. It is sweet with a delicious texture and a crunchy crust that makes it mouth-watering good!
Ingredients:
- 5 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- ¾ cup sugar
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 ½ teaspoons salt
- ½ cup butter
- ¾ cup mixed light and dark raisins
- 2 tablespoons caraway seeds
- 1 egg
- 2 cups buttermilk
- Cornmeal
- 1 (14-inch) pizza stone

- Preheat oven to 350-degrees. Place flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large sifter. Sift the ingredients together until the flour is light and mixed well. Cut the butter into the flour and mix the butter and flour with your hands until it gets grainy. Stir in the raisins and caraway seeds.
- Add the egg and buttermilk in a bowl and beat together until well blended. Make a well in the middle of the flour and add the buttermilk mixture; stir together until the dough comes together. Flour hands in order to handle the dough; dough will be sticky. Place about 1 tablespoon cornmeal onto the pizza stone. Divide the dough into two round loaves and place loaves on the stone. Let the bread sit on the stone for about 30 minutes; bread will rise. Place bread in oven and bake for 45 to 50 minutes or until the loaves are golden brown. Do not over bake bread. Let the bread rest for about 10 minutes before cutting. Serve warm with butter. Makes two large loaves.
