Showers & Flowers

Having a Bridal Shower the other day was more fun than I could have imagined, not that I haven’t done this a time or two before. But somehow this one was definitely different. When the mother of the bride called and asked if she could use my catering services and my parlor (yes, I have a parlor) for her daughter’s bridal shower, I said, “yes” of course. I must tell you that the bride was a beautiful 20 year old, who is by the way very industrious, and has just recently graduated from college with her bachelor of science in marketing.

When her mother told me that she would do all the decorating, I thought “wonderful”…just make yourself at home. I had no idea she would be bringing her grandmother’s collection of tea cups and saucers from all over the world. Nor did I think she would transform the entire parlor, vestibule, and kitchen into a “tea-house” atmosphere complete with vintage gloves, vases, burlap and lace, and tons of collector platters, crystal pitchers and candles. I should have thought something was up when she arrived at 9:00 in the morning to prepare for a 2:00 afternoon event.

After the transformation from “country kitchen” to “Victorian palace”, it was time to display the crumpets. I did a little of my own decorating, complete with crystal cookie stands filled with my desserts which were Sugared Pecan Balls, also known as Russia Tea Cakes, St. Louis Gooey Butter Cake, andhomemade Custard-filled Cream Puffs. For the chocolate lovers, I had Chocolate Cream-filled Cup Cakes. The main dishes were equally showed-off, and sat upon 3-tierd cake stands. These included Crunchy Chicken Salad with Purple Grapes over Croissants, Avocado Turkey wraps, and the regal Strawberry Pecan Salad complete with Strawberry Vinaigrette.

As we sipped Raspberry Zinger Tea amid the flowering snowballs, all cut from my snowball bush, I must say it was an afternoon I will not soon forget. So, to all of you soon-to-be brides, how about hiring me? You decorate, I’ll cook!
