Red Hot July

Summer is officially here, June 22, and I must say I think I’m down in sunny Florida. You know, the way it rains everyday for about an hour, and then the beautiful sun comes out with everything green flourishing, Honestly, my 15 flower beds are beautiful; roses, hydrangeas, day lilies, on-coming hibiscus, an array of annuals; like marigolds, zinnias, inpatients, and of course, every weed imaginable.

So, will it rain all summer? Most likely not, but then who can predict the weather? However, July is here and so far it has been hot, hot, hot!

Did I mention that not only the flowers are flourishing, but also my 12 tomato plants? They are already 5-foot high and leaping. Every tomato grower wants to boast that he or she will produce their first tomato on the 4th of July. That would be me! And I am glad to report the first tomato did land on July 4th.

Of course, July is always a red-hot with record-breaking temperatures. But it is also a month boasting the founding of our great country on July 4th, 1776. We celebrate with fireworks, barbeques, and parades. Our Star-Spangled Banner still waves, and we tear-up as we see our flag waving in the wind. It immediately demands our respect and honor. We feel patriotic and blessed.

While we might complain about the weather, which is extremely hot today, we should never complain about living in the greatest country on the face of the earth. July is red-hot for many reasons, but the greatest just might be the freedom we enjoy every day. The sacrifice made by our men and women soldiers who enlisted of their own free-will to keep America free, must always remain sacred in our memory. Thank you, Lord, for the freedom I must never take for granted!

C’mon July, bring us a wealth of vegetables, cool evenings, and cold lemonade.
